By taking him outside it seems to me, like it was a reward. If he goes straight back to attacking, say "no" pick him up again and put him back behind the gate and wait until he calms down. Let him out again, and if he still attacks keep doing it. Even if you have to do it 25 times, eventually he will learn. I know stuff like this takes a lot of patience, but it will be well worth it!!
