I live just North of Tampa; we haven't had a direct hit in years, but we get some pretty vicious thunderstorms.
My dogs aren't afraid of the noise and winds, but they get perturbed at the thunder: it disturbs their "chi", their sense of "well-being" - so the two boys go outside, stand in the rain and bark at the heavens. The little girl sits inside, watching them OUTside, and looks confused. But she has MUCH more sense than to stand in the rain like those silly BOYS

.
Even during fireworks, the worst that happens is that they'll come sit beside me for a little reassurance.
If your pooch handles the thunderstorms, s/he'll be able to tolerate the bigger storms. Just make sure you have a 2-week supply of meds, food, and all the other stuff necessary (like favorite TREATS!!) for comfort and well-being.
