Sounds like it could be a Reverse Sneeze -- they are more prone to do it when they are excited. So, when they are getting extra attention, would be a normal time for it to be exhibited.
I would check out youtube videos for Reverse Sneeze and Collapsed Trachea -- just ot make sure it is not the more serious CT. But I doubt he is faking, probably the Reverse Sneeze.
