We have 2 yorkies, 9 1/2 mths old. After having the terrifying experience of Bailey running out the back door when she was 4mths old in the cold Minnesota winter when it was pitch black outside, we decided to do something different so they couldn't get away from us like that ever again. It was one by far the scariest thing we went through thinking that Bailey was going to take off & never come back to us when she was so little. My husband found her underneath a tree, as whatever she was chasing must have stopped there. NOW...We have 2 tie-outs for them to go potty outside our backdoor. I have one side of the tie-out leash clipped to the stake outside the door, and 2 little hooks in between the screen door & our main backdoor that the other end of the tie-outs rest on. We open the main door, and the screen door is still shut & the clips are there to clip on the dog's collars. So now they get clipped BEFORE we even open the door to outside. We have worked w/them at all our doors now and they do listen to stay (it takes lots of practice!), but for the backdoor, having them hooked up before they go out really makes us feel more at ease that our little babies wouldn't take off on us. We live in town & don't have a fence, so they have to be on a leash when they go outside.
