The tough part is figuring out how to resize them. If you don't have the software, the above thread recommends a free download.
The avatar must be 75x75 pixels. You post it by going under the search menu and hitting "edit avatar". Then choose file. It will tell you if it's too big.
Posting with these messages is even easier, but again you have to resize. I usually go 400 x 600 pixels. After typing a new message, scroll down to "manage attachments," then choose file(s).
If you're still struggling, try PMing red98vette. She has her own instructions that newbies rave about.
