Personally, I think it's easier to teach them to ring a bell suspended from the door knob. Saves the door, too! It will ring automatically every time the door is opened but you can give it an extra jiggle to be sure that Rambo notices it. I bet he'll catch on quickly especially if he was house-broken before.
