To find a good quality yorkie, I believe you should go to a great quality breeder. Great breeders have studied about the breed for years, have a true fondness for the breed, and familiarized themselves with all health issues that affect the breed. They carefully choose their breeding dogs, by looking and understanding pedigrees, and only breed those dogs that closely match standard. Furthermore, they thoroughly understand what standard means, and more importantly, they understand why it's important to breed to standard. The breeder has gotten her breeding pair through legitimate means, and has obtained the right to breed them, so this means that they are allowed to be listed with the AKC. A great breeder understands that the particular breed might not be the best choice for certain families, and often refuses to sell to those people who don't have the resources to properly care for the breed. This can involve how much free time the people have or even having young children in the home, so many things, but a great breeder will help a puppy buyer understand if the breed is the best match for them at this particular point in their lives. A great breeder does required heath testing, and understands that a healthy puppy is more important than a beautiful puppy, and doesn't skimp any areas regarding her dogs health, so the chance of producing healthy pups are increased. Even though I didn't want to breed or show, I too wanted a good Yorkie, but I realized I would have to find a great breeder, to produce a good Yorkie. I always recommend that people check out the Yorkshire Club of America, which is the mother club for the AKC for yorkies; they have a lot of good information on their site, and breeder referrals. I think everyone should talk to a great breeder before purchasing a dog; you will really gain so much knowledge in what to look for in a breeder. Great breeders aren't breeding as a part time job either, so they aren't in it for the money, and so their prices are often extremely reasonable, they are breeding because they believe they have something to offer and can improve the breed. So one of the questions, you should ask is why do they breed? Here's a link to the YTCA. Look on the left hand side of the page, and click on "Frequently asked questions," especially informative is "What Is A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER."
