I always wonder about stuff like that too. I had a friend who adored her mother and I always wondered why?? Her mother met a man when my friend was 15 and gave up her kids for him, married him, and had a son with him. The kids she gave up adored her--worshiped the ground she walked on. The other son, the one she kept, was totally blase about his mom. Not the same thing as your dog story -- but still it makes me wonder.
