Default Out of the Whelping Box

and into???? My pups will be 3 weeks old on Sunday and they are already climbing out of my whelping box. I fixed up a wire crate with a bumper pad but I don't like the way Momma gets in and out- she seems rough on the pups. I would like to know what you do when your pups leave the "nest" and how do you keep them warm enough? Also- should I be letting out into the x-pen now to roam? Thank you for your imput and this is my first litter so I am learning more and more everyday.

pictures of old whelp box and today's bed- they are both kept inside an x-pen
