I found some information online. Someone did PM me some helpful information from their experiences both with and without an agent. I wasted one morning calling telephone numbers that refer one to a different telephone number, with no human actually answering a phone anywhere. The process seems more or less slow and complicated depending on the particular airport, with Logan being fairly user hostile as dealing with customs involves a trip to the airline cargo terminal for paperwork, then to a customs office at Black Falcon Terminal in South Boston to get your paperwork approved, and a fun little drive back to the airport to pick up the dog---Customs will only accept cash for taxes and fees, the amount of which seems to be secret and variable from day to day, clerk to clerk---Glad I don't have to go there often.
