Yes, it is good to do it before surgery (and a bile acids test isn't a bad idea either). However, that is like saying a human only needs one blood panel and CBC in their lifetime. It needs to be done at least yearly after age six and if you can afford it or you are breeding, it probably should be done yearly now. Bile acids testing only needs to be done once if the results are normal.
