I use a leave in conditioner called Summer Winds Protect-A-Coat. On mats I use it straight, (not mixed with water), and gently work it out. I know sometimes they won't stand still long enough for it to be worked out. Before I was liberally using the Summer Winds, I had a boy that got matted as a puppy and I just cut it off. When his hair grew out, he championed 18 months later! When I get home I'll try and get some pictures of him up on YT. CH Alisstar's Southern Son, Sonny. Good luck with your little man's coat.
