It lasts about 3 weeks in general. First the swelling and blood, 10-14 days later is the main danger period, its when their ready to mate, although it can vary, every bitch is different. The colour has usually gone off by this time so dont be fooled into thinking its all over- some can continue to bleed though-. After that the hormons gradually go off and dogs will loose interest. You just have to confine them until its over. Generally they dont get effected in the same way people do although for some they can have hormonal problems.
I too have a tiny girl who's not going to make more than 4lb, but I intend to get her fixed. Better that than worry about her getting out and caught by a male. Now that would worry me to death. |
