I think it's okay now...I don't think any adult would look at someone who's autistic, having down syndrome or even a learning disability and call them "retarded". It just wouldn't be acceptable and that's certainly not what the OP did. I'm sorry about your brother. If someone called my beautiful, precious, autistic nephews "retarded" I might have issue with it as well (depending on the intent of course).
