I talk to all my animals ALL the time. I think that the conversation is good for our human souls and our animals always feel included in our lives. When it comes time for verbal commands I use a serious tone but for general chit chat I talk normally.
Lately Bella Mia and I have been leaning over the edge of the kiddie pool looking in to the pool filled with our 5 (almost 5 week old) puppies disccussing the puppies and what we should do with them. Sherman has NO manners when it comes to nursing, he always pushes and shoves his way in and hogs the milk, Spike is a bit of a crybaby crying if he doesnt get his way wanting to be held, Max needs to go to sleep when all the other puppies do instead of always staying awake much latter than everyone else, Lily has not been acting very ladylike she was caught trying to "hump" a stuffed animal and she is a girl, and Bumblebee is the runt and we are worrying that he is developing a bit slower than all the rest but we will keep our eyes on him.
This is GREAT conversation for us....luckily my family also talks to the animals so my conversations with Bella Mia are normal to them.
