 Yorkie barking at big dogs!
Hi! This is my first time visiting this site and posting something. I am excited to hear the advice people will have for me! My yorkie Danny just turned 6 months old and has graduated puppy kindergarten, but he still barks like crazy at bigger dogs whenever he sees them (he was enrolled in a small puppy class and by the end of the 6 weeks he was FINALLY playing with the other dogs - at our 1st class he just about barked the whole hour at all the dogs!). We didn't get him until he was 14 weeks old and he is our only dog so I don't feel like he was ever "socialized" with big dogs during that critical window. Has anyone been able to overcome this problem? We were told to stay at a safe distance from big dogs and treat him when he looks at them and doesn't bark (and them gradually move closer to them). However, we live in a condo so it is hard not to see big dogs in the elevator without Danny freaking out! What should we do??? Any advice is welcome! We don't want our little boy to be insecure and scared. We tried to teach him "quiet" but he seems to get possessed when he gets into that mode. Thanks for any suggestions!!! |
