We opted for a bell. We placed a service bell by the back door. While training - as we scooped up bailey to take her outside - we took her paw to the bell. Now she rings the bell when she needs to go outside.

Lurpie has the right idea. A great book reference is Housetraining for Dummies. In general, I used that method, but modified if for our situation.
