It's not so much Oliver's weight, but the fact that if he hasn't eaten in a day and a half, he is probably dehydrated. Dehydration causes dangerous electrolyte imbalances that can cause cardiac arrest. Early on, subq fluids are usually enough, but if a few days go by, IV fluids are usually necessary. Eight pound Lady ended up on an IV several times after only 48 hours with an upset tummy when she was younger. I learned the hard (and expensive way) not to "wait & see" with stomach upsets with a toy breed dog.
