We have 5 dogs and free feed. We have been free feeding for years. My dogs know the food is available and eat what they want, but don't seem to be overeating. Although, when we first got Meadow about a year ago, she would eat and eat and eat. We had to sort of watch her and shoo her away from the food from time to time. She was our son's exgirlfriend's dog but she didn't want her anymore. She was 9 years old then. She has since realized the food isn't going anywhere and has stopped pigging out so much. It works out well for us. I honestly don't think we are using the combined recommended feeding amounts, although probably fairly close. They also don't gobble their food up, they take their time.
