Cutting the quick isn't the end of the world. You can put quick stop on it. I've done it a few times to Scruffs, but his quick is super long and his nails need to be cut once a week otherwise they are impossible. My advice is when he squirms and yelps and whines DO NOT let go or loosen your grip. That will make him think the more he squirms then he gets to be free!
