I free feed my 2 little dogs with a small helping of wet food in the evening, sometimes I add one in the morning if I noticed that they hadnt eaten enough kibble. The recommended amount of dry kibble for my size dogs ( 4 and 9 pounds) is up to one cup. They both eat about a 1/2 a cup a day. My 2 bigger dogs are fed 2 meals a day with the amount to feed them split between 2 feedings with a small amount of canned mixed in, in the evening. I was free feeding them too but my sheltie ended up with a fatty blood disorder and is on a special diet and my beagle was getting a little on the chubby side and I didnt want it to get out of hand. If I notice that my 2 little ones were gaining more than they should than I would definitly ration out thier portions but for now free feeding is working for us.
