Sorry for the delay in posting an update on Miss Sammy...I'm happy to report that she's still with us!
She originally had a recheck appointment on the 31st but, we decided to bring her in early last Thursday while I had Bella in for a follow up ear exam. It was driving us nutty trying to figure out if our eyes were deceiving us into thinking we were actually seeing a tinge of pink to those gums of hers or not.
So, her lab results from Thursday showed a marked improvement and she actually doubled her values as you can see below:
HCT: 16.7% (up 8.2%)
HGB: 6.7% (up 2.4%)
RBC: 2.26 (up 1.12)
Her values are still seriously
abnormal but, this was at least a significant improvement well beyond what anyone could have ever expected of her. In fact, our Vet was surprised to see Sammie actually on her feet for her visit. The techs were equally surprised to see Sammie even among the living...I doubt any of them expected to ever see Sammie return there...let alone on her own 4 paws!
In the meantime, she will continue on Prednisone (Steroid), Doxcycline (Antibiotic) & Azathioprine (Immunosuppressant) till her next recheck visit in 10 days.
Sammie's Vet although very happy to see how Sammie was rebounding, he did caution that this was very likely the results of the Steroids and that her values are still critically low and must double again for her to even be considered in a sort of remission.
My son took her for a walk the other night to the park down the street and while he carried her there & back a neighbor or two commented similarly..."Ya know she's not going to get much out of the walk if you're carrying her all the way"...little did they know. I asked him what he said in response and he said he explained her condition and that he wanted her to have as many trips to the park for as long as she had.
My son is very optimistic and with a degree in Microbiology...he comprehends much more than I do about all of this...which I think makes him also appreciate just how delicate her life is at the moment.
So...was it the prayers, positive thoughts or all of her medication that helped make way for this turn around? Who knows but, we certainly appreciate ALL of your well wishes & prayers especially the candles, too!
I'll continue to keep updating on our Miss

Sammie and let ya know how she does in the coming weeks.
