I thought the same, but didn't want to spoil it for the people that hadn't seen it yet. I think by this point most everyone who will see it already has. You are right, he had a personal interest in making this movie. I don't know if it were to Dillinger exactly, but I remember hearing that he felt like Dillinger could have been an ancestor or familiy member back then, as Johnny's own grandfather was a bootlegger and speakeasy owner back in the prohibition days. Kind of paying tribute to sticking it to the "man".
