Four months or three pounds is the general guideline. Many show breeders neuter their males before they ever go to their new home. If the hormones never start, usually marking doesn't either.
Many vets like to wait until six months to neuter to see if any baby teeth have been retained and need to be pulled out. Obviously, it is cheaper and safer for them to be put under anesthesia only once. Of course, you are taking a chance if you wait that they may start marking.
