Fergus loves his crate.
Its his own "den".
Part of it is from day one I made sure the crate was there, with his recieving blanket (from his breeder) and his favorite toy. We just left the door open for him to go in and out as he pleased. If the only time your dog ever gets in is when you put him there, and he gets locked in, it probably won't feel as much like "his space" as a punishment space.
Just leave it in a room close to you with the door open, all the time. It may still work (but some things have to be started early)
