I was told the same thing, I had molly shaved at 3 mths, she was very dark and has a cotton coat that matts very easy, she is now 2 and all silver and blonde, she still has the cotton coat so we keep her in a puppy cut to avoid the matts

Her coat never changed texture from being shaved.
