I find it a little disturbing how the media keeps pointing out that it was a wolf/dog hybrid that did this, when in reality ANY dog (or cat for that matter!) is capable of doing harm to a small infant if they are left unsupervised. That really ought to be the focal point of a tragedy like this rather than turning it into a BSL issue. Penny is wonderful with children, but even knowing her, I would never leave a baby unattended if she could get at him. Any animal has the potential to have their instincts kick in at any time, and infants make strange sounds, smell funny, and certainly do not command the sort of respect that an adult human or even an older child can demand of a dog. We choose to live our lives beside these beautiful, intelligent creatures with predatory roots, and we need to respect that and always take that into consideration when bringing them near smaller animals-- smaller humans included!
