I started by buying an outfit I like, laying it down on paper and tracing it. Then cutting it out and sewing it.

The school of trial and error. Also I got a Simplicity Sewing Book, available at the fabric store. It has pictures and explanations of every seam, zipper, anything you may be asked to do in a pattern. Sometimes the patterns seem overwhelming if you look over the entire instruction page. Just break it down into one activity at a time. Don't put time pressure on yourself, if you make a mistake, get a seam ripper and remove what you did wrong. The good thing about sewing is you can rip it out and start over.

If you get stuck do you have someone in your area that can show you what to do?

good luck. Hope this helps a little.
