I have always left a bowl of dry kibble out for my Bella. But she also is fed one meal a day of wet food. She is 5.7 lbs at 14months and a great portion of that is her hair. Her vet said that she is the perfect weight for her size. But in your case, I would consult your vet if your are concerned about weight gain. I hope this helps
