since he has a cotton coat the pin brush isn't going to get down to the roots and get out the mats. You if you continue to use the pin brush make sure you also run a comb thru the coat to make sure you get out all the tangles. Since your cotton coat isn't a show coat you can use a slicker brush to get the mats out. I love my chris christensen slicker. Its really gentle and gets out mats with ease.

I have a cotton coat yorkie as well and the slicker/comb combo is the only thing that really gets all the way thru her coat. its a big hassel tho so i just keep her short
