You only have to use their shampoo if you use the cartridges. One cartridge did one large (well ok she's more like extra large at 110 pounds) dog once, one medium dog twice, and my Yorkie twice...and I do pretty long washes since they all get pretty filthy playing. You can use it without a cartridge as a shower attachment for your dog.
