how bad are her teeth? is there a lot of tartar on the back teeth? Is there a thin red line across the gums just above the teeth?
If her teeth are really bad then i'd agree with the vet and go for the dental, then take really good care of her teeth so she won't have to go thru it again.
if her teeth aren't that bad then maybe try a scaler to scrape some of the brown off and then use petz life or brush her teeth everyday.
