yes and no. sometimes i would give up and go on inside. i would give him 5-10 minutes, no more, and if ollie didn't go at all, i would put him in his crate. (i should have told you earler, i used the crate-training method to housebreak him). if he peed, i would bring him inside, and if i was not able to watch him, i would put him on a leash and make him follow me around so that i could watch him. i would put the leash on my belt loop an he would follow me around. i didn't do that too often, but i did it, because that is what the trainer at petsmart suggested, which is a good idea, because at first, i wasn't paying attention to his signs that he was giving saying "need to potty mom!" if i could watch him, i would and if i thought he had to go, i would take him out. if he didn't go at all, i would put him in his crate, and let him try again about 30 min to an hour later.
AND I KNOW HOW EXHAUSTING THAT IS! It makes me wonder why i want a second one!!

but you know, know that he is fairly housebroken, i don't even remember that being a burden.
Honestly, the best thing I can tell you is crate train. and reward IMMEDIATELY after he pottys, keep treats or something in your pocket, and as soon as they hunker down, go ahead and verbally reward, and then when he is done, give a treat. give two. sometimes ollie would get 4 treats for poopin outside i was so excited!
I hope that helps. i talked to 2 different vets, and we did the puppy class at petsmart, which the trainer there was great, and answered a lot of questions too
