It can also be quite painful to walk if the hair between the pads is
growing father out than the pad itself. When they walk it pulls causing
pain to them. Like someone pulling your hair.

You can use a moustache trimmer between the pads and sorta dig out
the hair between the pads. It won't hurt them. It's important to keep
the underfoot clean and free of long hair.
Also like Madelin stated put the food down and with scissors cut around
the foot to the back of it on each side. Keep the hair trimed just
above the toenails or even with as long as it is not touching the ground.
