Well I'm using it at square one with puppies and it works very well. The grass mat is at one end of the crate and the bed it as the other with food and toys inbetween. But I'm assuming yours are already pad trained? So it might be more challenging unless you go back to the crate training method. Maybe you could try using that spray that is used to attract them? Or try putting a pad on top of the potty patch and then make the pad smaller and smaller in size until it's gone and they will be used to going on the grass?
