Embarassed Flea Allergies

My Millie was scratching like crazy and when I checked her she had bright red hives all over her body. I had found a tick and she was getting Revolution. I gave her Children's Claritin - that's all I had. When I took her to the vet, the hives had gone - because of the medication and the vet said he could find nothing wrong. He checked for fleas and said there were no fleas on her and there was no evidence of fleas.
However, the hives returned. I checked the internet and found out that if there are fleas you can find them by submerging the dog in water. So I filled the bath tub with water and carefully submerged her making sure to keep her head dry. Two flea ran to the top of her head to avoid being drowned and I caught them. It turns out that you can't always tell if there are fleas, and I found out that Millie is allergic to their bites.

I never knew.
