Animal Smiley 019 Need advice on crate training

Hi, I got my new yorkie three days ago. He is a 13 week old sweet loving little guy. However, he cries, barks and basically goes crazy for the first 5-30 minutes of being is his crate. We have tried several things and discovered the only way for him to be in there without peeing or pooping is to give him a small space (about half on a 18x24 wire crate) and no bedding. (His previous owners let the puppies go on towels so he is used to going on cloth). We put him in the crate at night and for an hour or so at a time several times a day. I have a couple of questions.
1. Is there anything I can do to make the transition from lap to crate easier for him so he doesn't get so upset? We put a treat in the crate when we put him in and he goes in by himself, but he immediately turns and barks when I shut the door.
2. How long will it take for him to go in and not get so upset?
3. Should I put his food and water in the crate or feed him outside?

I have other questions as well but this is the thing that is driving us crazy at this moment.

This is our first inside dog and any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
