I agree, it is best if the dog has time to get acquainted with the handler but I have seen dogs taken in by a handler with very little beforehand contact and did amazingly well and won. I think a lot of it depends on the dog and their personality. Also, these were yorkie handlers that the owner was familiar with and the handler was familiar with the dog and the dog had ring experience.
