How about just regular Heartgard and then something like Panacur? There is really no reason to deworm unless the dog has a positive fecal and then a dewormer is selected based on which worm needs to be eliminated... |
Sorry, but I disagree with this statement. I once lost a puppy to worms because I relied on three negative fecals. My vet told me then to never rely solely on fecals. He said he did a fecal on a puppy once that tested negative, then the puppy died from worms (the necropsy showed hooks). My vet said worms are like chickens, in that they don't lay eggs every day. He said if you do a fecal on a day the worms didn't lay eggs, you will get a false negative. From that day forward I never relied on fecals but have wormed my dogs periodically whether they need it or not. Back then I used a wormer called Vercom Paste that got hooks, rounds, whips AND tapes. But it is no longer available. Now I rotate wormers to make sure I get them all. I only worm for tapes when I actually see them (rarely on my dogs but my outdoor cat gets tapes every few years).
OP, I used Ivermectin for years on my large dogs and cattle (horses too) but I don't use it on my yorkie. I have also used it on wildlife such as squirrels, but you have to be extremely careful using such small amounts. On my yorkie I use Panacur, Strongid T, and another I am drawing a blank on the name. And I rotate them. He is on a heartworm medication that also is a wormer so I feel he should be well covered for worms.
