I bought a seatbelt for Cash. It is an attachment for a harness and the normal seatbelt goes through it and then clips into place. The harness that I got with the attachment has a chest plate to protect the doggie's ribs.

I really like the seatbelt because I know that he is safe if something should happen, and the chest plate is much better than a normal, thin harness which can cut into the skin and place pressure in the wrong places.

I like your idea of making your own type of restraint, I would just like to mention that you might think about what will protect him in case of an accident, just in case.
