You should wait. It's the landlady's building and in part her livelihood. These decisions are hers to make. Your rights to decide ended when you signed the lease. I think it was a good idea to ask, and I'm sorry she said no, but she has the right to do that. Plus, she probably knows what she's talking about concerning the other tenants. She has other people's welfare to consider as well as yours.

And then there's the fact that if you get a dog and she finds you in violation of your lease, it's likely to cost you a ton of money. It's just not worth. I know August seems like a long, long time from now. Maybe she'll let you out of the lease before then. I'd ask her about that next. If she thinks you might sneak in a dog and she really doesn't want one, she might be willing to let you go if she can rent the apartment fairly easily.

I hate to have this opinion because when I asked my landlady, she said yes. So I feel really bad for you. But the waiting probably won't be as painful in the long run as the consequences of not waiting.
