I have a girl but for "every day" I use pony-tail holders. I bought the little bitty ones for babies. They work really well and won't break the hair. Even if she has a bow in, I take it out at night and use the pony-tail holder for sleeping. The come in lots of colors. For a boy you could get the primary colors and he would still look "manly".
