I bet you can keep working with him and get him past this!
I have seen many shows dogs - mostly boys - go through this stage. Lots of positive reinforcement - both positive praise and treats - given when you see them showing confidence. I have let mine run around the front yard playing with me dragging a old lead....just to help them see that the lead can be a fun thing.
