Have you tried craigslist? I looked there and on kijiji for a long time before I found Scruffs. You might want to find some one who is rehoming their dog, not a breeder. Scruffs owner wanted $650 but they didn't make me pay since I was (and am) by far the best home for him. I was the only one who was responsible and called when I said I would, showed up, etc. I'm sure if you find the perfect dog and an owner who is rehoming the fee probably isn't that big of deal to them.

I was picky on the dog I wanted. I wanted him to be adorable, have standing ears, black and tan, house trained, crate trained, socialized, over a year, under 5 lbs... Scruffs has standing ears and is semi socialized and over a year. He wasn't black, crate trained, house trained, or small... but I fell in love with him and the little things really don't matter when you fall in love with them.
