I use washable pads (and sell them, too) and I haven't noticed that they smell anymore than the paper ones.

I too, recommend both outside training and potty pad training. It sure saves standing outside in the rain trying to get them to go.

To wash them I always do a short prewash cycle to get the bulk of the urine out before running them through a regular wash. If after prolonged use they start to retain an odor you can use OdoBan in the last rinse and it takes it away.
