I always keep a collar and tag on all of mine. Two weeks ago Bogey got out of the yard when my son left the side gate open. My husband was in the yard with all 4 of them and when the woman called to say she had him it was because of his tag not a chip. She was so nice when I showed up in tears and told me that it was great that he had his collar and tag so she could find call me immediately to let me know she had him. IMO I would never not keep a collar on mine. It is just way to great of a chance that something might happen and I would never be able to get over it....EVER!

You can buy a cat collar that has elastic or the break away clasp and add the tag. Doodlebug was a little over 2 lbs when I brought him home and when I went to pick him up I had a collar and tag with me.
