I wouldn't leave food out at all. I would feed him 2x daily.
Let him know your in charge of the food. It's important to
keep a schedule. If he's feed twice a day, he shouldn't be
full when eating only hungary. When giving him treats make him
sit for them as well as sitting before being fed. Once he knows
and trusts you he will rely on you for food and know he
won't be going hungary. I think you need to build up trust between
the two of you and this is a way to do it. It may take some time
but he'll understand in time.
If there is no food around there is nothing to hord.
