Milly is exactly the same... she eventually has learned all her favourite toys by name now, and will now even run around the house looking for them if I ask "where's (insert toy name here)?". Then she brings it to me and the game begins.
But she will not ever touch or go near a ball, she just watches them roll away.
I think they key is probably just repetition with rewards. I don't think Milly particularly enjoys the fetching part of the exercise, but when I've picked it up, we play tug of war, which she loves and it is probably her incentive for bringing stuff back.
