Stella does the same thing sometimes (she's finnicky) but I think it might be an age thing, we've been taking her for walks ever since her last puppy shots three weeks ago (she's now five months) and she's getting better slowly. She's still weird in that she now loves when I put her harness and leash on, because she knows she's going for a walk, but I virtually have to drag her out of the door (our air conditioner is right by the door, so I think the noise of that scares her a bit). And while we're on walks, she sometimes decides that a nap in the grass sounds like a good idea. It's taking a while to get her to actually walk, but I take her on a couple "mini" walks every day for about 5-10 minutes and then in the morning when she first gets up (and it's not very hot out yet) we go for a long 20-30 minute walk.
I've found that treats don't work well, she's too nervous to eat on walks, but the more people and other dogs she meets on our walks, the less nervous she seems to get. Just be patient and try sitting in the grass first, then work your way up to walking along the edge of the grass for a few feet. That's what we had to do at first. Eventually, once they're not scared anymore, curiosity gets the best of them and they take off to go check something out. |
