This is what we did also.
Ellie didn't need a tail hole because it tucks against her nicely.
It is easy to unsnap when they need to go to the bathroom.
Of course this wouldn't be as easy for a peepad trained dog.
Ellie did wiggle out of a larger onesie, so I used the smaller one and had an addition sewn on because she is long. Also with the bigger ones she tried to get to her incision through the leg holes. Some will also try to bite through it, so it doesn't work for all dogs. In that case and e-collar is necessary.
